When most people think of cocoa, they think of chocolate — sweet, indulgent, a little bit guilty. But real cocoa, the kind we use at Honico, is something very different. It is one of the most nutritious natural ingredients on the planet, and Ghana happens to produce some of the finest cocoa in the world.

What exactly is cocoa?
Cocoa comes from the seeds of the Theobroma cacao tree. The name “Theobroma” is Greek for “food of the gods” — and once you know what this ingredient does for your body, that name starts to make a lot of sense.
The seeds are fermented, dried and ground into a rich, dark powder. When you keep it minimally processed — without high heat or heavy refining — you preserve most of its natural goodness. That is exactly what we do.
What does cocoa actually do for you?
Quite a lot, as it turns out.
Cocoa is one of the richest sources of antioxidants of any food on earth — including blueberries and green tea. These antioxidants, called flavonoids, help protect your cells from damage and support your heart health by improving blood flow and keeping blood pressure in a healthy range.
It is also a natural source of magnesium, iron, zinc and manganese — minerals that many of us do not get enough of in our everyday diets. Magnesium in particular plays a role in over 300 functions in the body, from muscle recovery to better sleep.
And then there is the mood connection. Cocoa contains theobromine and phenylethylamine, two natural compounds linked to feelings of alertness and wellbeing. That warm, feel-good sensation you get from a good cup of hot chocolate? That is not just comfort — it is chemistry.
Raw cocoa vs regular cocoa powder
Not all cocoa is equal. A lot of commercial cocoa powder goes through a process called Dutch processing, which uses alkaline solution to reduce bitterness and darken the colour. The result looks good, but the process destroys a significant amount of the natural antioxidants.
The cocoa we use at Honico is kept as close to its natural state as possible, so you get the full nutritional benefit in every spoonful.
How to get more cocoa into your day
The simplest way is to make Honico Boo your morning drink — stir two spoonfuls into warm milk and you are done. If you want more flexibility, Honico Don is a pure cocoa-based powder you can add to smoothies, baking or porridge exactly as you would any cocoa powder.
