It is not a nut — and it is incredible
Despite the name, tigernut is not a nut at all. It is a small root vegetable — a tuber — that grows underground. And it has been feeding people in West Africa and the Mediterranean for thousands of years. Archaeologists have even found evidence of tigernut consumption in ancient Egypt, dating back over 4,000 years.
In Ghana, tigernut is known as atadwe, and it is the star ingredient of atadwe milk — a naturally sweet, creamy drink that has been a beloved part of local food culture for generations. We include tigernut powder in all of our Honico products, and here is why it earns its place.
What tigernut brings to the table
Tigernut has one of the most well-rounded nutritional profiles of any plant food. It is high in fibre, particularly a type called resistant starch, which acts as a prebiotic — meaning it feeds the good bacteria in your gut rather than being digested quickly. A healthy gut microbiome is linked to better digestion, stronger immunity and more stable energy levels throughout the day.
It is also rich in heart-healthy monounsaturated fats — the same type found in olive oil — and contains natural sugars that provide gentle, sustained energy without sharp spikes.
And because it is completely free from gluten, dairy and tree nuts, tigernut is one of those rare ingredients that almost everyone can enjoy, regardless of dietary restrictions or allergies.
What it does inside Honico products
Tigernut does quiet but essential work in every Honico blend. It adds a subtle natural creaminess and a gentle sweetness that softens the bitterness of cocoa and turkey berry. In our Chocolate Spread & Beverage, it contributes to that smooth, rich texture. In Honico Boo, it makes the granules dissolve more easily and gives your drink a satisfying body. In Honico Don, it adds just enough natural sweetness to make the powder genuinely pleasant on its own.
A nod to where it comes from
Atadwe milk is one of Ghana’s most iconic street drinks — naturally sweet, filling and deeply nourishing. Every time you use a Honico product, there is a little bit of that tradition in every sip or spoonful. We think that connection to where our food comes from is worth holding onto.
