Your new daily ritual

Sometimes the simplest things are the best. Two spoonfuls of Honico Boo stirred into warm milk takes about three minutes and gives you a genuinely nourishing, chocolatey morning drink that sets you up for the day. Once this becomes your morning habit, you will wonder how you started the day without it.

Details

  • Product: Honico Boo
  • Serves: 1
  • Time: 3 minutes
  • Meal type: Drink / Breakfast

What you need

  • 2 tbsp Honico Boo
  • 250ml warm milk or oat milk
  • Extra honey to taste (optional)

How to make it

  1. Warm your milk gently — do not let it boil.
  2. Add the Honico Boo granules to your mug with a small splash of warm milk.
  3. Stir into a smooth paste before adding the remaining milk — this prevents lumps and gives a silkier drink.
  4. Add a drizzle of honey or a pinch of cinnamon if you like, stir once more and enjoy.

Making a paste first before adding the full amount of liquid is the key to a smooth, well-blended cup every single time. It takes ten extra seconds and makes a real difference.

Honico Honey and Cocoa Muffins

No refined sugar. Just real ingredients.

These soft, domed muffins are sweetened entirely by Honico Chocolate Spread & Beverage — no added sugar at all. The honey in the spread caramelises beautifully in the oven, creating a lightly glossy top and a moist, flavourful crumb. They are simple enough for a weekday morning and impressive enough to share.

Details

  • Product: Honico Chocolate Spread & Beverage
  • Makes: 10 muffins
  • Time: 35 minutes
  • Meal type: Baking / Snack

What you need

  • 4 tbsp Honico Chocolate Spread & Beverage
  • 1½ cups plain flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp baking soda
  • Pinch of salt
  • 2 eggs
  • ½ cup milk
  • 4 tbsp coconut oil, melted
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

How to make it

  1. Preheat your oven to 180°C and line a muffin tin with paper cases.
  2. Whisk the eggs, milk, coconut oil, vanilla and Honico Chocolate Spread & Beverage together until smooth.
  3. Sift the flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt into a separate bowl.
  4. Fold the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients — stop as soon as it is just combined. Do not overmix or the muffins will be dense.
  5. Divide the batter between the cases, filling each about two-thirds full.
  6. Bake for 18 to 20 minutes until risen and a skewer comes out clean.
  7. Cool in the tin for 5 minutes, then transfer to a rack. Drizzle warm Honico Chocolate Spread & Beverage over the tops while they are still warm.

Honico tip

Drizzle the spread over the muffins while they are still warm from the oven — it soaks in slightly at the edges and sets into a fragrant honey glaze as it cools. Simple and stunning.

Honico Don Chocolate Crêpes

Thin, delicate and made to be filled

These chocolate crêpes are lighter and more pliable than you might expect — and that is largely thanks to the tigernut in Honico Don, which adds a natural creaminess to the batter. They are thin, delicate and beautifully chocolatey, and they make an exceptional breakfast or dessert when filled with Honico Chocolate Spread & Beverage and fresh strawberries. One batch goes fast, so consider doubling it.

Details

  • Product: Honico Don
  • Makes: 8 crêpes
  • Time: 25 minutes
  • Meal type: Breakfast / Dessert / Baking

What you need

  • 2 tbsp Honico Don
  • 1 cup plain flour
  • 2 eggs
  • 300ml milk
  • 1 tbsp melted butter, plus extra for the pan
  • 1 tbsp raw honey
  • Pinch of salt
  • To fill: Honico Chocolate Spread & Beverage and fresh fruit

How to make it

  1. Add all the batter ingredients to a blender and blend until completely smooth. Leave to rest for 15 minutes — this relaxes the gluten and gives you a more tender crêpe.
  2. Heat a non-stick pan over medium-high heat and brush lightly with melted butter.
  3. Pour in a small ladleful of batter and immediately swirl the pan to coat it in a thin, even layer.
  4. Cook for about 1 minute until the edges begin to lift, then flip and cook for a further 30 seconds.
  5. Stack on a warm plate and repeat with the remaining batter.
  6. Fill each crêpe with Honico Chocolate Spread & Beverage and fresh fruit, then fold into quarters or roll and serve.

Honico tip

The first crêpe is almost always a test crêpe — it seasons the pan and is rarely the prettiest. Eat it immediately in the kitchen while it is hot and consider it the cook’s reward for all the effort. The rest will be perfect.

Turkey Berry: The Ingredient Your Grandmother Already Knew About

A familiar face with an impressive profile

If you grew up in Ghana, you almost certainly know turkey berry — not from a health food store, but from your family kitchen. It goes into soups and stews, it shows up in home remedies, and it has been part of West African food culture for as long as anyone can remember.

What many people do not realise is just how remarkable this small, bitter berry actually is. Turkey berry is one of the most nutritionally dense plants in the region, and it is now gaining attention from researchers and nutritionists around the world. At Honico, it is in every product we make — and it is one of the main reasons our products do more than just taste good.

What is turkey berry?

Turkey berry — known in Ghana as abeduru or kantosika — is a small, round berry from the Solanum torvum plant. It grows wild across tropical regions including West Africa, the Caribbean and parts of South Asia. Traditionally, it is dried, powdered or cooked directly into dishes. Its taste is earthy and slightly bitter, which is actually a sign of the powerful plant compounds inside.

Why it is so good for you

Turkey berry is one of the richest plant sources of iron you can find. Iron deficiency is one of the most common nutritional problems in the world, particularly among women and children. Adding turkey berry to your daily diet is one of the most natural and accessible ways to support healthy iron levels.

It is also packed with vitamins C and B, and contains alkaloids and saponins — natural compounds with known antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. Research suggests it may help regulate blood sugar levels, support liver function and ease digestive discomfort.

In short, turkey berry does a lot. The bitterness you might notice in Honico products is not a flaw — it is a sign that the good stuff is there.

How it works alongside the other Honico ingredients

One of the things we love about turkey berry is how well it works in combination. The natural bitterness of the berry is beautifully balanced by cocoa and honey, creating a flavour that is complex and interesting rather than harsh. Tigernut softens things further, adding a gentle natural creaminess.

The result is a blend where every ingredient makes the others better — nutritionally and in terms of taste.

Raw Honey: Why the Real Thing Matters

Not all honey is the same

Honey is one of the oldest foods on earth. People have been harvesting it for over 8,000 years — using it for cooking, for medicine, for preserving food, and for treating everything from sore throats to wounds. The remarkable thing is that modern science keeps confirming what traditional healers have always known.

At Honico, honey is not just a sweetener. It is a key functional ingredient — and we only use raw, unprocessed honey because the difference between raw and processed honey is significant.

What makes raw honey different?

Most commercial honey is pasteurised at high heat to make it look clearer and last longer on shelves. The problem is that heat destroys a large portion of honey’s natural enzymes, antioxidants, pollen and beneficial compounds. What you are left with is essentially sweetened water.

Raw honey is harvested carefully and kept at low temperatures, so all of those natural properties stay intact. It looks less perfect. It may crystallise over time. But it does so much more for your body.

What raw honey does for you

Raw honey has natural antimicrobial properties — meaning it actively resists bacteria. This is why it has been used for centuries to soothe sore throats and even treat minor skin wounds. It contains hydrogen peroxide and has a naturally low pH that makes it a genuinely hostile environment for harmful bacteria.

It is also a natural prebiotic, which means it helps feed the good bacteria in your gut. A healthy gut microbiome is connected to better digestion, stronger immunity and even improved mood — so a spoonful of Honico is doing more work than it looks.

And because honey contains a natural mix of fructose and glucose, it gives you a steady energy release rather than the sharp spike and crash you get from refined sugar.

How honey works in Honico products

Honey plays a different role in each of our products. In our Chocolate Spread & Beverage, it is the star — rich, fragrant and present in generous amounts, giving the spread its thick, glossy texture. In Honico Boo, it takes a back seat, adding just enough natural sweetness to round out the cocoa and botanicals without overpowering them. Honico Don has no honey at all, giving you full control over sweetness in your own kitchen.

A simple tip

When you stir any Honico product into a hot drink, use warm water rather than boiling. Temperatures above 70°C start to degrade the natural enzymes in raw honey. Keep it warm, not scalding, and you preserve everything good.

Tigernut: Ghana’s Best-Kept Nutritional Secret

It is not a nut — and it is incredible

Despite the name, tigernut is not a nut at all. It is a small root vegetable — a tuber — that grows underground. And it has been feeding people in West Africa and the Mediterranean for thousands of years. Archaeologists have even found evidence of tigernut consumption in ancient Egypt, dating back over 4,000 years.

In Ghana, tigernut is known as atadwe, and it is the star ingredient of atadwe milk — a naturally sweet, creamy drink that has been a beloved part of local food culture for generations. We include tigernut powder in all of our Honico products, and here is why it earns its place.

What tigernut brings to the table

Tigernut has one of the most well-rounded nutritional profiles of any plant food. It is high in fibre, particularly a type called resistant starch, which acts as a prebiotic — meaning it feeds the good bacteria in your gut rather than being digested quickly. A healthy gut microbiome is linked to better digestion, stronger immunity and more stable energy levels throughout the day.

It is also rich in heart-healthy monounsaturated fats — the same type found in olive oil — and contains natural sugars that provide gentle, sustained energy without sharp spikes.

And because it is completely free from gluten, dairy and tree nuts, tigernut is one of those rare ingredients that almost everyone can enjoy, regardless of dietary restrictions or allergies.

What it does inside Honico products

Tigernut does quiet but essential work in every Honico blend. It adds a subtle natural creaminess and a gentle sweetness that softens the bitterness of cocoa and turkey berry. In our Chocolate Spread & Beverage, it contributes to that smooth, rich texture. In Honico Boo, it makes the granules dissolve more easily and gives your drink a satisfying body. In Honico Don, it adds just enough natural sweetness to make the powder genuinely pleasant on its own.

A nod to where it comes from

Atadwe milk is one of Ghana’s most iconic street drinks — naturally sweet, filling and deeply nourishing. Every time you use a Honico product, there is a little bit of that tradition in every sip or spoonful. We think that connection to where our food comes from is worth holding onto.

Cocoa: The Ingredient That Started It All

More than just chocolate flavour

When most people think of cocoa, they think of chocolate — sweet, indulgent, a little bit guilty. But real cocoa, the kind we use at Honico, is something very different. It is one of the most nutritious natural ingredients on the planet, and Ghana happens to produce some of the finest cocoa in the world.

We use pure, minimally processed cocoa powder in every single Honico product — our Chocolate Spread & Beverage, Honico Boo, Honico Don, and our peanut blend. Here is why it deserves a place in your daily routine.

What exactly is cocoa?

Cocoa comes from the seeds of the Theobroma cacao tree. The name “Theobroma” is Greek for “food of the gods” — and once you know what this ingredient does for your body, that name starts to make a lot of sense.

The seeds are fermented, dried and ground into a rich, dark powder. When you keep it minimally processed — without high heat or heavy refining — you preserve most of its natural goodness. That is exactly what we do.

What does cocoa actually do for you?

Quite a lot, as it turns out.

Cocoa is one of the richest sources of antioxidants of any food on earth — including blueberries and green tea. These antioxidants, called flavonoids, help protect your cells from damage and support your heart health by improving blood flow and keeping blood pressure in a healthy range.

It is also a natural source of magnesium, iron, zinc and manganese — minerals that many of us do not get enough of in our everyday diets. Magnesium in particular plays a role in over 300 functions in the body, from muscle recovery to better sleep.

And then there is the mood connection. Cocoa contains theobromine and phenylethylamine, two natural compounds linked to feelings of alertness and wellbeing. That warm, feel-good sensation you get from a good cup of hot chocolate? That is not just comfort — it is chemistry.

Raw cocoa vs regular cocoa powder

Not all cocoa is equal. A lot of commercial cocoa powder goes through a process called Dutch processing, which uses alkaline solution to reduce bitterness and darken the colour. The result looks good, but the process destroys a significant amount of the natural antioxidants.

The cocoa we use at Honico is kept as close to its natural state as possible, so you get the full nutritional benefit in every spoonful.

How to get more cocoa into your day

The simplest way is to make Honico Boo your morning drink — stir two spoonfuls into warm milk and you are done. If you want more flexibility, Honico Don is a pure cocoa-based powder you can add to smoothies, baking or porridge exactly as you would any cocoa powder.

Cocoa is not a trend. It is a centuries-old ingredient that people across West Africa and beyond have known and trusted for generations. At Honico, we are just making it easier to enjoy every single day.
